The aim of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS ) Awareness Month is to inform Americans they may be able to save infant lives by knowing how to prevent SIDS and decrease its risk.  

SIDS is the sudden unexplained death of an infant after sufficient studies have been conducted to find a cause to explain the death, including an autopsy. These deaths often occur during sleep or in the baby’s sleep area. In Georgia, for every 100,000 births, 127.2 infants die from sudden unexpected events including SIDS. 

To protect our community’s babies, we must ensure that parents and caregivers always place infants on a separate safe sleeping surface, on their backs for each sleeping session. Mayor Lester Miller presented a proclamation to Atrium Health Levine Children’s Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital in efforts to help bring awareness. You can read the full proclamation here.
