May is National Stroke Awareness Month and Atrium Health and the American Stroke Association want everyone in Macon-Bibb to know the risks and signs of a stroke. Georgia is in the “Stroke Belt” of the United States, meaning people here are at a 30% higher risk for stroke than other place in America.  

Mayor Lester Miller presented a proclamation encouraging everyone to be aware of the risks and help save a life by calling 911 immediately if you suspect someone is having a stroke. Risk factors for strokes include hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and other disorders and lifestyle choices. You’re also encouraged to learn the signs of a stroke.  An easy way to remember is the acronym FAST Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and T – time to call 911.
