Construction begins on new Fire Training Facility

Crews have officially begun working on the brand-new state-of-the-art fire training station on Tinker Drive. The Fire Department, Mayor, construction crews, and local leaders held a ceremonial groundbreaking to kick things off on Thursday, May 19.

“We weren’t lying when we said we were going to be moving fast,” said Fire Chief Shane Edwards. “Two weeks ago, our firefighters had their final burn in the former building, and now we’ve cleared the lot as we get ready for the next step in getting our brand-new training center.”

Warren Associates is leading construction on the $3.2 million dollar facility. $2.8 million of the cost is coming from voter-approved Special Local Options Sales Tax (SPLOST) and the remainder was set aside from the County’s general fund. This new facility was carefully chosen and designed after Chief, County Manager, and firefighters traveled to different centers across the country to make sure Macon-Bibb County firefighters were getting exactly what they needed.

“Having this new center will help keep our Class One title,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “But it will also allow our Sheriff’s Office to train, and surrounding counties in our state. We are so excited to see how this center will change our community for the better.”

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
