Early voting on OLOST open now

October 15, 2021

Voters in our community are deciding whether to pass an OLOST, which stands for Other Local Option Sales Tax. It would add a penny to our sales tax, but force also reduce the property tax by an estimated 7 mills.

A study conducted several years ago using revenue data from the state about our county showed that more than 70% of a penny sales tax is collected from people that do not live in our county. This includes people driving in to work, driving through on the interstates and highways, and driving in for shopping, eating, and entertainment…but still using government services like public safety, roads, and more.

Early voting is happening now through October 29 at two locations from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday voting will take place on October 16 and October 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The voting locations are the Board of Elections Office (2525 Pio Nono Avenue) and the Elaine H. Lucas Senior Center (132 Willie Smoker Glover Drive.). Election Day is November 2.

The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is October 22. Click here for that application.
