September 15 through October 15 is recognized as Hispanic Heritage Month and the Office of Small Business Affairs (OSBA) is celebrating our Hispanic-owned local businesses and organizations. The team has partnered with the Hispanic community to hold information sessions, fun events, and more to support these shops and their owners.

“It’s our job to reach out to our vital small businesses and give them the tools they need to succeed,” says OSBA Director Charise Stephens. “It’s especially important to support minority-owned businesses and make sure they’re given the same opportunities as everyone else. We’re proud to recognize some of those during Hispanic Heritage Month!”

On Wednesday, October 6, OSBA is hosting a webinar in Spanish featuring Macon-Bibb Community Affairs intern Elizabeth Almena and Empreza Tax Services owner Gabriela Gilner. The women will provide information for small businesses owners and entrepreneurs looking to set up shop in our community. The meeting will be by Zoom, and registration is required. You can do so by calling (478) 803-2819 or emailing cstephens2@maconbibb.us.

On October 7, there’s a planned “cash mob” at three Macon restaurants. A cash mob is an event where people (the mob) take their money (the cash) and spend as much as they can at these businesses. You’re encouraged to invite friends, families, and co-workers to swarm these restaurants with your appetites and your love. It’s happening from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at:

  • The 3 Countries (195 Spring Street)
  • La Bella Morelia (524 Mulberry Street)
  • Ricky’s Taco Shop (518 Cherry Street)

October 13 is Technical Assistance Day at the Office of Small Business Affairs. It’s an open-house style event where business owners and those interested in starting a business can meet the staff, learn where to start, get help with their questions, and network. There will also be information on grant writing and receiving grants. That’s happening from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at City Hall (700 Poplar Street).

There’s a free concert – “Encuentro de Culturas” – happening Saturday, October 16 at Willingham Auditorium (1400 Coleman Avenue) at Mercer University. Members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will be performing at the direction of Artistic Director Juan R. Ramírez. Masks are required to attend, and the show is taking place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
