Community members, organizations honored with proclamations

At the Macon-Bibb County Commission Meeting on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, several proclamations were issued recognizing people and organizations in our community.

 

Commissioner Seth Clark presented a proclamation to Young Buddy Barron to celebrate Mr. Barron’s 100th birthday. Barron was morning March 20, 1921. He’s lived in the Historic Pleasant Hill Community for more than 70 years and is a member of the New Hope Gospel Singers. April 6, 2021 is now known as Young Buddy Barron Day in Macon-Bibb County.

Commissioner Valerie Wynn presented the proclamation to local library staff in honor of National Library Week. The proclamation talks about how vital libraries are to communities, and how they are inclusive and accessible for everyone. We celebrate the importance of literacy, knowledge, and connectivity. April 4-10, 2021 is National Library Week in Macon-Bibb County.

Commissioner Elaine Lucas presented a proclamation to Wanzina Jackson, Executive Director of the Economic and Community Development Department. The proclamation was to recognize how Community Development Block Grant funds have helped build houses, infrastructure, and viable urban communities in our community. In the past year, these funds have helped more than 800 people. April 5-9, 2021 is National Community Development Week in Macon-Bibb County.

Director of Small Business Affairs Charise Stephens presented a proclamation to healthcare officials in honor of Minority Health Month. This year, the focus is on how COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting minority communities. Our healthcare workers are focused on encouraging minority and vulnerable populations to get vaccinated, wear masks, wash hands, and continue to socially distance to avoid the spread of this disease. So far, Atrium Health Navicent has provided more than 14,000 public vaccinations to people in Macon-Bibb County. April is National Minority Health Month.

Commissioner Paul Bronson presented a proclamation to the Macon Area Habitat for Humanity. This year, the organization is celebrating 35 years in operation here. They have helped more than 120 families build homes in some of our most historic neighborhoods like Lynmore Estates and Pleasant Hill. They focus on increasing home ownership and removal of blight. April 6, 2021 is Habitat for Humanity day in Macon-Bibb. Congratulations on 35 years in our community!
