The portion of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail from Central City Park to the east side of the Martin Luther King, Jr. bridge will be closed beginning November 15, 2017. This is being done so the Georgia Department of Transportation can install storm drain pipes as part of the I-16/I-75 Interchange reconstruction project.

“People won’t be able to access the Trail from Central City Park and won’t be able to cross the MLK bridge,” says Parks and Beautification Director Sam Kitchens. “I want to thank people who use the trail regularly for their patience during this work because, once it’s all completed, we’re expecting to have a much-improved Trail that stretches from Amerson River Park to the Ocmulgee National Monument.”

This work is part of the I-16/I-75 Interchange reconstruction project. This $500 million investment will improve the safety of the corridor by widening and reconstructing I-75 from Hardeman Avenue to Pierce Avenue and I-16 from I-75 to Walnut Creek within the city of Macon. The project will improve each of the interstate highways by constructing wider shoulders, concrete barriers and, in most locations, additional lanes.
