Our Fire Department’s Investigation Division received upgraded camera equipment thanks to a grant dedicated to Lt. Ben Gleaton, who we tragically lost earlier this year in an accident. Before his passing, though, he was working on getting a grant for his department.

“Lt. Gleaton and I always talked about the needs of the Arson Investigation Division,” said Interim Fire Chief Shane Edwards. “We talked about the equipment that could be utilized and how it could benefit him and his team in conducting investigations.”

More than a year ago, Lt. Gleaton was working with the Georgia Arson Control Division to get the grant, and on Thursday, September 23, the Control Division presented the Fire Department with new camera equipment in his honor.

“It’s bittersweet to be here and present this,” said Georgia Arson Control Consultant Ken LeCroy. “It’s great to be here in honor of him and respect for his family and all that he has done for this area. The camera will not only just help the Investigation Division but benefit the entire County.”

Lt. Gleaton’s family was able to be there and witness the presentation.

“Ben was a remarkable young man. He was truly dedicated to the Fire Department and to his family. Having his life cut short at 48 years old was a shock to us, but accomplished a lot in those 48 years,” said Lt. Gleaton’s father Joe Gleaton.
