Get your gloves ready for the first boxing tournament at the Macon-Bibb United Boxing Gym since 2019! The center, located at Freedom Park (3301 Roff Avenue), is celebrating its 7th year in operation and invites everyone to come out and enjoy the competition.
The tournament is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 25, and weigh-ins begin at 9:00 a.m. If you’re a boxer, now is the time to get registered. It’s free! For attendees, it’s $15 to get in, and children 5 and under are free. Everyone is required to wear a mask for entry.
The boxing gym opened in 2014 and has since been home to dozens of competitions and tournaments. The gym is even popular for those who don’t compete, but just want to get a good workout. The center’s director says boxing cultivates more than just winners.
“I see kids come in here shy, nervous, scared to express themselves, and then they get in that ring and everything changes,” says Freedom Park Director James Hand. “It’s amazing to see how this can build their confidence. Boxing helps build character and discipline. I tell them, don’t get in a fight – save it for the ring!”
If you’d like to enter the competition, contact center director James Hand at Jhand@MaconBibb.us or call (478) 751-9248.
Each competitor will be matched according to their weight, age, and experience. It’s open to children as young as eight, and men and women of any age.
Typically, there’s a fee for fighters to compete, but that is waived in celebration of the center’s 7th anniversary, and to celebrate the return of the competition showcase.
While competitors can register the day of the event, everyone is asked to register early to ensure they get a spot and an appropriate opponent. Winners will receive a trophy as well as coveted bragging rights.
