It’s a phone call our E-911 Center gets a lot during the 4th of July weekend – someone hurting themselves while lighting fireworks. The Fire Department wants to avoid these incidents this weekend and remind you how to use fireworks safely.

  • Wear safety glasses when lighting fireworks.
  • Keep spectators at a safe distance and light the fireworks in open space, away from trees and coverings.
  • Read the labels and instructions carefully.
  • Never light explosive fireworks in your hand or stand directly over the fireworks.
  • If a firework does not light, do not pick it up and relight it. Leave them alone for a while.
  • Once you’re done with the fireworks, dowse them in water.

“Please do not throw fireworks at people,” said Interim Fire Chief Shane Edwards. “Most fire injuries come from improper use of fireworks.”

Remember, Macon-Bibb County has an ordinance that says you cannot shoot fireworks after midnight. If you do have an emergency, call 911 immediately.
