On Wednesday, June 16, 2021, our Public Works, Solid Waste, and Parks and Beautification departments joined forces to bring the Clean Streets Matter program back to the Historic Pleasant Hill Neighborhood, where it was originally announced. Crews got to work early to clear illegal dump sites, pick up litter, sweep streets, and cut grass along the right-of-ways.

“This is a prevalent area for businesses, so hopefully we can keep everything clean for people,” said Solid Waste Manager Maurice Jackson.

“Hopefully we can show the community that we don’t forget. We will still come back and try to help each community out by getting everything cleaned up,” said Public Works Director Tim Wilder. “We’re going to keep going, and we’re going to go hard until we tackle it all.

Crews came together using different equipment from their different departments. They also swept ten streets around the neighborhood and picked up 8,280 pounds of bulk waste and 4,140 pounds of yard waste that morning.

“Collaboration is important for neighborhood cleanups because of the variety of tasks that need to be completed. Solid Waste has the equipment for larger debris piles, while Parks and Beautification and Public Works specialize in litter removal, street sweeping, and right-of-way mowing,” said Parks and Beautification Director Michael Glisson.

Our Clean Streets Matter initiative began on Friday, January 15. Since that effort:

  • Crews from Macon-Bibb County cleaned more than 2.6 million pounds of debris from more than 270 illegal dump sites;
  • The Macon Water Authority has swept 881,000 pounds of dirt, leaves, pine straw, and litter from more than 90 miles of road; and
  • More than 3.6 million pounds of yard waste has been collected.
