A ‘one stop shop’ for resources to prevent crime

There is now one building dedicated to housing all Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Outreach resources. On Thursday, September 23, the Sheriff’s Office opened the first Outreach and Restorative Justice Center (774 Hazel Street).

The 43,000 square foot building directly across from the Law Enforcement Center aims to keep people out of jail and give our community a safe space.

“It’s very fortuitous we are opening the Outreach and Restorative Justice Center right now as we are in the middle of our MVP initiative,” said Sheriff David Davis. “With it opening now, this gives support to what we’re doing with Macon Violence Prevention . It also gives the Sheriff’s Office a venue to host trainings and community events that will tie in directly with the MVP initiative.”

The building houses more than 20 different groups that the Sheriff’s Office supports, such as C.H.A.M.P.S., the Explorers Program, Defensive Driving, Project ChildSafe, Citizens on Patrol, Book ‘Em, and so many more.

Before the opening of the building, these programs were scattered throughout the County. The Sheriff’s Office often had to use different facilities, such as the Elaine H. Lucas Senior Center, to hold meetings. This new Center changes that, as it has several offices, and conference and training spaces.

“This is a one stop shop, but most importantly a safe zone,” said Major Tonnie Williams, who manages the Outreach and Restorative Justice Center. “When a kid is here, regardless of what their troubles are outside of this building, they have time to reflect and have someone who they can trust.”

This larger space gives the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office the ability to expand and add more programs to their outreach initiative. To learn more about the existing groups and meeting times, call the Sheriff’s Office Outreach at (478) 803-2710.
