When Hurricanes Irma and Matthew were bearing down on the East and Gulf Coasts, hundreds of people evacuated to Macon-Bibb County, and the American Red Cross of Central Midwest Georgia worked with Macon-Bibb’s Emergency Management Agency and Recreation Department to open up several public shelters. Hundreds of volunteers and employees stepped up to help these people in their time of need, from staffing the shelters to providing supplies to delivering meals to cleaning the buildings and more.
Now, the Red Cross and EMA are offering training sessions that will allow more people to get involved in these efforts and support the people that would shelter here in the future. Three classes will be offered in mid-August, two for Shelter Fundamentals and one for Shelter Management. You must complete the one of the Fundamentals courses prior to taking the Management course.
During the courses, you will learn:
- the policies and procedures for opening, setting up, running, and closing a shelter;
- how to provide a safe and secure environment; and
- the roles, responsibilities, and tasks of a Shelter Manager.
