Macon – A Macon man was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison Tuesday, a little more than two weeks after a Bibb County jury found him guilty of kidnapping a woman in 2015.
Steve Anthony Fort, 22, was convicted in a jury trial of forcing a woman to drive him away from Macon’s Pendleton Homes, 3401 Houston Ave., on July 21, 2015, as police were arriving after receiving a report that Javoris Butler, 29, had been shot. Butler later died.
Chief Assistant District Attorney Nancy Scott Malcor and assistant district attorney Ben Conkling prosecuted Fort on murder, armed robbery and other charges stemming from the shooting. Jurors deliberated more than four hours over two days before finding him not guilty on those charges Jan. 26.
“Mr. Fort will pay a heavy price for the actions that led to his conviction, even if the trauma he inflicted made it difficult to prove all that he did that day,” District Attorney David Cooke said Tuesday after the sentencing.
