Macon – A convicted child molester pleaded guilty to possession of a telecommunications device by an inmate on Tuesday, just before jury selection in his case was set to begin.
Robert Lewis Gunn, 47, was already serving a 20-year prison sentence stemming from a Feb. 25, 2008, Bibb County child molestation conviction and Carroll County child molestation and sexual battery convictions from 2006.
Pursuant to his guilty plea on Tuesday, he’ll serve an additional three years behind bars without the possibility of parole after his prior sentence is complete.
If the case had gone to trial, prosecutors Blake Morton and Kyle Owenby would have presented evidence showing:
Gunn was an inmate at Central State Prison on Macon’s Fulton Mill Road in September 2016 when an adult observed a 13-year-old girl video chatting with Gunn on a cell phone. The adult later found screen shots of video chats on the phone that included sexually inappropriate images of Gunn. The adult contacted authorities, leading to a search of Gunn’s prison cell. An illegal cell phone was found attached to the bottom of Gunn’s bunk.
Speaking after the hearing, Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Cooke said, “Sexual predators, like other inmates, often use contraband phones to continue their crimes even after they’re behind prison bars. With this sentence, Mr. Gunn has found out how costly those phones can be.”
