The Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Commission (KMBBC) kicked off a year round community clean up initiative on Thursday, March 5, in Third Street Park as part of the Great American Cleanup. The importance of having clean streets and neighborhoods, as well as how important it is for everyone to take part in the effort, was discussed by Executive Director Dr. Pam Carswell, Litter Prevention Committee Chair Ron Foster, NewTown Macon President Josh Rogers, College Hill Corridor Director of Communications Jessica Walden, Main Street Macon Manager Steven Fulbright, and Macon-Bibb County Mayor Robert Reichert.

“This year, we are kicking off a 365 Pick Up Macon campaign by encouraging people to work at beautifying their community every day, all year long,” says Dr. Carswell. The organization is asking neighborhoods, churches, businesses, residents, and Adopt-A-Spot groups to participate by hosting at least one cleanup at any point this year. “We are joining the rest of the country for the Great American Cleanup, but we want people to understand how important it is that this be more than a one-day event.”

People and groups interested in hosting a neighborhood cleanup can get support and resources from the KMBBC and Macon-Bibb County. The KMBBC can supply trash bags, safety vests, and gloves, and the Macon-Bibb County Solid Waste Department can arrange for a dumpster to be placed in and picked up from an area. To reach KMBBC for resources, call 478-330-7054; to schedule a dumpster, contact the Solid Waste Department at 478-803-0499.

As part of the year-long campaign, the Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Commission worked with MaconBibbTV to create a logo for the initiative, images for a billboard, and a public service announcement letting people know how they can get involved. The PSA can be watched by clicking here, and the Commission is encouraging people to share it with their friends, families, and organizations.

“I am continually amazed at the impact we can have on the beauty of our city by working together. From our employees picking up trash and debris, mowing right-of-ways, and cleaning up illegal dumps to community groups that regularly host cleanups in their neighborhoods, each of us can make a difference,” says Mayor Reichert. “Together, though we can make Macon-Bibb the jewel of Middle Georgia, and I want to thank our employees and community groups for leading the charge.”

The Great American Cleanup will be  April 10, and cleanups are currently being scheduled for the Village Green and Lynmore Estates neighborhoods. On Saturday, March 14, there will be cleanups in the District 9 5 x 5 area and on Walnut Creek in East Macon. Main Street Macon, as part of the initiative, will hold a Downtown Beautification Project on April 25 at 10:00 a.m.
