Commissioners held their annual Strategic Planning Retreat, along with staff, on January 30 and 31 in Athens at the Center for Continuing Education. The Retreat was facilitated by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, which has helped Macon-Bibb with its planning efforts since before consolidation in 2014.
At this year’s Retreat, District 9 Commissioner Al Tillman was elected the new Mayor Pro Tem by his fellow Commissioners. As Mayor Pro Tem, he sat on the Committee on Committees with Mayor Reichert and Commissioner Bechtel to make assignments. Throughout the two-days, Commissioners were provided a mid-year budget review, ways to reduce costs with changes to healthcare and pension plans, discussion of the OLOST and TSPLOST, and updates on SPLOST projects and the Blight Remediation Program.
As part of the mid-year budget review, Commissioners discussed how savings could be found this year to mitigate a project $4 million funding shortfall, brought about primarily because of a significant increase in healthcare payouts. The full budget presentation – as well as the others presented – can be viewed using the below links.
