On Saturday, May 21, 2016, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission – along with the NAACP, Macon Water Authority Board Member Dwight Jones, and other officials – will sponsor a breakfast supporting Macon-Bibb public works employees as part of National Public Works Week. This includes employees from the Public Works, Solid Waste, and Parks & Beautification Departments. The breakfast will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Buck Melton Community Center (150 Sessions Drive) and is open to all employees in those departments.

“The people that serve our community in these departments deserve our thanks and recognition each and every day,” says Macon-Bibb Commissioner for District 3 and Co-Chair of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elaine Lucas. “They keep our government and our community moving, from fixing our streets to picking up recycling to mowing parks and so much more.”

“It takes a special kind of person to work in this field and do this kind of work,” said Dwight Jones, Macon Water Authority Board Member for District 3.

“They work very very hard in sometimes dangerous situations. Whatever the weather is, we’re out there doing our jobs,” said Solid Waste Director Kevin Barkley before offering tips for drivers that will help keep employees safe, which Public Works Director Marvin Land later also stressed.

“We want to thank MLKC for recognizing our people,” added Parks & Beautification Director Stephen Lawson, pointing out that the people in these departments work alongside emergency responders to help protect the community after disasters and severe weather. “All of us are family; when one of us is down, we’re all down.”

The Macon-Bibb County Commission also recognized these departments at its bimonthly meeting with a proclamation proclaiming it National Public Works Week in the county and asking that all people “recognize the contributions which public works officials make every day to our health, safety, comfort, and quality of life.” More than a dozen employees were on hand to be recognized and receive the proclamations.
