Macon-Bibb currently has the second highest per capita pedestrian fatality rate in Georgia, and the Macon-Bibb Pedestrian Fatality Review Board (PFRB) is working on ways to reduce that rate through infrastructure improvements and educational outreach.

“As a community, we must make pedestrian safety a priority of our consolidated government. We have the ability to convene partners and the public in order to find the best ways to improve road safety for everyone,” says Macon-Bibb Commissioner Elaine Lucas.

As part of its outreach efforts, an issue-specific website has been launched to help educate the public, make announcements, and seek feedback. Included on the website are: efforts and initiatives of the Board and its partners, including the adopted Vision Zero principles; announcements and media coverage of efforts; information from the first Pedestrian Safety Summit; accomplishments; and PFRB members.

“With our new website, we want to provide people with information about what we’re doing and ways they can help make the roads safer,” adds Mrs. Lucas.

About the PFRB
Responding to concerns about pedestrian safety, the Macon-Bibb Commission approved an ordinance sponsored by District 3 Commissioner Elaine Lucas that created the Board. It is charged by the Commission with finding ways to make all of the county’s roads, streets, and alleys safe for pedestrians.

The Board meets every month and is a forum for the Sheriff’s Office, Health Department, School District, county departments, Planning and Zoning, elected officials, AARP, and concerned citizens to develop strategies for creating a safer road environment.
