The Rosa Jackson Community Center held a Grand Reopening on Friday, February 17 and is continuing the celebration with a family fun day on Saturday, February 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Families are invited for food, fun, and fitness to celebrate new life for a community center that has served East Macon for more than 30 years.

During the Saturday celebration, there will be a series of activities (schedule below) and vendors from around Macon-Bibb to provide useful information to families. Vendors include Georgia Department of Public Health, First Choice Primary Care, Paxen Learning Center, Macon-Bibb County Extension Office, Poetic Peace Arts, and Gamez on Wheelz.

Activity Schedule

Piano & Guitar Demo Lessons – 10:30 a.m.

Teen Talk – 11:30 a.m.

Couponing 101 – 12:00 p.m.

Senior Zumba – 12:30 p.m.

Combat Aerobics – 1:00 p.m.

Chess – 1:30 p.m.

The improved Center will be a hub of activities and classes serving the East Macon-Bibb community. It has been closed since January 2016 so it could undergo a significant improvement project, including: a new gymnasium, an exercise/workout room, a splash pad, a new playground, and extensive renovations to the existing facility, including a new computer room, new meeting spaces, warming kitchen, and more. The project was funded primarily with $3.8 million from the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).

Additionally, $150,000 in blight bond funds were used to create the new Park Plaza. Previously to this round of improvements, other upgrades were made, including air conditioning, lighting, and a new roof for the original gym. The total project between SPLOST phases and the blight funds has been $4.5 million.

In January 2016, a groundbreaking was held to celebrate the start of construction, and you can  hear what the construction team, head of the Recreation Department, and Commission said then about the project and its impact on the neighborhood by watching this MaconBibbTV feature.
