State pickleball tournament returns to Macon-Bibb

Pickleball is not only driving more players to the game, but driving even more people to Macon-Bibb County. For the second time, Tattnall Square Park is hosting the Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) Pickleball State Tournament. The tournament is happening September 16-18.

About 150 players are coming from Moultrie to Rome. to play pickleball this weekend. Last year, the County had to participate in a competitive bidding process with other cities in the state to host the tournament, but because the tournament went so well last year, GRPA chose Macon to host it again this year.

“Macon Pickleball boasts the most active and engaged memberships of any club in the state. Our members give so freely of their time and talents to provide visitors with a welcoming and hospitable atmosphere,” said Macon Pickleball Board Member John Roberts. “That combined with the vision of our local leaders to recognize the enormous economic impact potential of pickleball and invest in it by helping create the finest pickleball facility in the state, led the GRPA to award this tournament to Macon-Bibb for the second consecutive year. It’s an honor and a privilege to welcome some of the state’s best players this weekend”

“I don’t think you’ll find anyone that would tell you this isn’t the best facility in the state,” said SPLOST Coordinator Clay Murphy. “Being centrally located, having nearby hotels, being close to downtown with restaurants all makes it more inviting to people and groups.”

There are currently 17 dedicated pickleball courts lighted for people to play all hours of the day.
