On Friday, May 19, Macon Mental Health Matters (MMHM) held its second session of its Lunch & Learn series. This session, focused on men’s mental health and was live streamed from Just Tap’d. You can watch it here.

The session included Mayor Lester Miller, Sheriff David Davis, Macon Violence Prevention (MVP) Coordinator Jeremy Grissom, and other leaders in our community.

“There’s a stigma with men that they have to play the role of being ‘the man’ and if they scrape their knee, they need to put some dirt on it. It’s the same with mental health,” said Mayor Miller. “We need to do better about letting men know that it’s ok to ask for help.”

This session was free and open to everyone, with lunch provided. Dozens of community members showed up to ask questions and listen to different perspectives from men when it comes to mental health.

“I don’t know about you all, but mental health was never talked about in my household. It was like a myth,” said Grissom. “We’re coming to a space now where we’re trying to figure it out.

“This is dedicated to empowering men to prioritize their mental health and well being,” said MMHM Coordinator Andrea Cooke. “Our event is designed to provide you with valuable insights and information on what it means to be mentally healthy, how therapy can be beneficial, and dispel stigmas about therapy.”

Led by experienced mental health professionals, the session explored a variety of topics related to men’s mental health, including stress management, relationship challenges, work-life balance, and self-care.

The next and last Lunch & Learn this month will be held on Friday, May 26 at Just Tap’d and will focus on Relationships and Mental Wellness. Click here to RSVP.
