The Parks & Recreation Department is working to rebuild its adaptive program following quarantine in 2020. It consists of sports, activities, field trips, and other activities for people of any age who have cognitive or physical disabilities, and the home base for the program is Delores A. Brooks Recreation Center (3326 Ocmulgee East Boulevard.)

On Wednesday, November 3, the team will start pickleball classes at Delores A. Brooks Recreation Center. It’s free to attend and will begin at 5:30 p.m. Registration is required to attend. Click here to register through the recreation portal.

The adaptive program offers a variety of events, classes, and sports activities all geared toward those who learn and exercise a little differently.  They have weekly yoga classes, board game days, enrichment days with art projects, field trips, and more. Currently, the bowling league is in full swing, and there’s still space to join. It costs $40 to sign up and $7 for each visit to Pin Strikes. Contact Adaptive Coordinator Jabree Jones at (478) 845-8346 to learn more and sign up.

“This adaptive program is so important. A lot of times our athletes are excluded because they’re different. What some people forget, is that we’re all human and deserve the chance to play sports and have recreational enjoyment!”says  Jabree Jones, who  has been in her position for about a year and has enjoyed forming an inclusive program for Macon-Bibb. “I love what I do because I get to help normalize their lives as much as possible, and take them out into the community.”

Our mission is Building Healthy Communities through People, Parks, and Programs, so we offer positive recreational programs that are inclusive for all people,” says Parks & Recreation Director Robert Walker. “ Our Adaptive Program allows people with both physical and cognitive differences to participate on an even playing field with each other. Through this program, we are promoting positive health and quality of life for individuals of all ages and abilities.”

If you or someone you know would be a good fit for the adaptive program, call the Recreation Department at (478) 621-6280. Sign up for the Adaptive Program Newsletter here.
