On Wednesday June 2, 2021 Mayor Lester Miller announced the next round of houses to be taken down in his Blight Fight campaign.
“We’re celebrating a milestone in our fight against blight, in our fight to remove falling in, burned out, and blighted structures from our neighborhoods, to make our community safer, more beautiful, and a better place to live,” said Mayor Miller.
In April 2021, Mayor Miller first started with a goal to take down 30 blighted houses in 30 days. Our crews surpassed that goal by finishing ahead of schedule, two weeks ago. During those demolitions, Code Enforcement was working to get another round of blighted houses lined up and ready to go.
“This initiative is made up of a lot of partners that are all working together,” said Code Enforcement Director J.T. Ricketson. “When we work on these demolitions, we are coordinating with our Tax Commissioner’s Office, the Macon-Bibb County Land Bank Authority, County attorneys, Public Works, Solid Waste, Macon Water Authority, Planning and Zoning, and many private contractors.”
“We’re proud of all of the hard work our crews have done to make this happen,” said Mayor Miller. “We couldn’t do this without them.”
In this second round, Code Enforcement Department selected 34 properties, which includes 16 burned structures and 18 structures considered Vacant, Abandoned, and Dilapidated. All but two of them have Code violations going back more than seven years, and all of them represent a public safety and public health issue for the neighborhoods.
Once all of the houses are demolished in the first and second round, we will have removed 78 blighted houses from our neighborhoods since the start of our initiative.
