Macon – A Macon teenager was sentenced to prison Monday in a 2017 carjacking at Quick Serve, 1106 Rocky Creek Road.
DeAnthony Marcell Smith, 17, pleaded guilty to armed robbery during a hearing in Bibb County Superior Court. A judge sentenced him to serve 12 years, with the first eight in prison without the possibility of parole.
If the case had gone to trial, prosecutor John Regan would have presented evidence showing:
A man was filling his Hyundai Sonata with gasoline July 6, 2017, when he was approached by two teenagers. One of the teens, later identified as 18-year-old De’Angelo Williams, pulled out a gun and demanded that the man give up his car. The man complied, threw his keys on the ground and followed instructions to walk toward the store and get on his knees. The other teen, later identified as Smith, drove off in the Hyundai. The car was recovered about an hour later, less than a mile away.
Williams pleaded guilty to armed robbery last year, and was sentenced to 15 years with the first 10 in prison.
Speaking after the hearing, Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Cooke said, “At just 16 years old, Mr. Smith participated in a violent crime just so he could steal another person’s car. With this prison sentence, he won’t be driving anywhere for years to come. “
