Young leaders participating in the Secretary of State’s Student Ambassador Program, which is being led locally by the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections, are helping community leaders feed Veterans and the community this Veterans Day weekend. Students will be helping serve food at MeMaw’s Restaurant (4254 Mumford Road) on Saturday, November 11, from 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. There will also be free health screenings from Navicent Health for Veterans.

“It’s great for these students to be involved with the community at a young age and help realize what it means to be a servant leader. By helping out this weekend, they get to thank the people that fought and risked their lives to protect our freedoms and way of life,” says Election Supervisor Jeanetta Watson. “This will help make them better people as they grow into adults and into leaders in their neighborhoods and cities.”

About the Student Ambassador Program

The Secretary of State’s Student Ambassador Program is designed for 10th-12th grade students, and each school is allowed to nominate up to nine students as representatives. In Macon-Bibb County, almost 100 students from 11 schools have organized teams. “This is a great way to build leadership among the high school students of today,” says Election Supervisor Jeanetta Watson. “This is another way Macon-Bibb is leading the way around the state for engaging students in our community and molding the great leaders of tomorrow.” As a team, the selected students set goals for their schools and the means of achieving them. Throughout the year, the teams will organize and carry out various community and leadership events, and for each event, they receive points toward a statewide competition. The school with the most points at the end of the year is recognized at the State Capitol.
