The Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation Department will host the 2015 Southeast Coast Regional Junior Olympic Boxing Championships this Friday and Saturday, May 22-23, 2015, in the Bishop Frank Ray Boxing Arena at the Freedom Park Boxing & Conditioning Club (3301 Roff Avenue). Tickets for the event are $10 per day, or $15 for the whole tournament. Children under 5 years of age are free.
Starting Friday, May 22 at 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, May 23 at 1:00 p.m., the Macon-Bibb United Boxing and Conditioning Club will host this major regional event for boxers’ ages 8-16. The winners will then compete next month at the national tournament in West Virginia.
Unlike many boxing tournaments where boxers compete as individuals, this Southeast Regional Tournament will consist of full teams coming to Macon from Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina…so three of the teams will be staying in local hotels and eating in local restaurants. In addition, the Georgia team consists of boxers from all throughout the state, adding even more economic development to our community with guests enjoying Macon-Bibb County during the weekend.
With funds from the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), the gymnasium at Freedom Park was converted into the Bishop Frank Ray Arena, featuring two rings, 600 bleacher seats, new flooring, and more.
