Macon-Bibb County celebrated the start of construction on the new South Macon-Bibb Recreation Center (7035 Houston Road) on Friday, July 29.
“This is a project that the southern portion of our county has long asked for, has long needed, and has long deserved,” says District 7 Commissioner Scotty Shepherd. “It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of everyone living around here or that are looking forward to another place to bring their families. From voting for the SPLOST to attending one of the design forums, it’s the people of Macon-Bibb that have made this project possible.”
The $7,640,000 project is being funded by the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), and will include a recreation center, baseball fields, a pool, pavilions, green space, concessions, and more. The design was created after three forums where the public could let Macon-Bibb know what type of facilities and programs would be built and available.
Macon-Bibb’s Quality of Life was identified as a Focus Area for its first Forward Together Strategic Plan, and upgrading and improving parks and recreation centers – especially with the use of SPLOST funds – are a key component of that effort.
