Macon-Bibb’s Pedestrian Fatality Review Board held its first Pedestrian Safety Summit on August 16 Government Center. The event was free and open to the public, and more than 50 people – from elected officials to law enforcement to community members to department heads to partner organizations – attended. Macon-Bibb currently has the second highest per capita pedestrian fatality rate in Georgia, and the Board is working on ways to reduce that rate through infrastructure improvements and educational outreach.

During the Summit, people learned about the creation and goals of the Board, heard about current issues with pedestrian safety based on real data, got a roads assessment by the Georgia Department of Transportation, and learned about some of the solutions being discussed and implemented. Below are links to the presentations given at the Summit.

“Our roads need to be safe for walkers, runners, cyclists, and even vehicles so that we can reduce the number of traffic fatalities in our community,” says Nancy White, Macon-Bibb County Health Department Administrator. “With this Summit, we wanted to educate the community about our desperate need for safer roads, let them know what’s being done, and ask them about other areas of safety that need to be addressed.”

An educational outreach program and pedestrian safety website are currently being developed by the Board, and they expect to publicly roll those out in the the next few weeks.
