On January 4, collection of garbage, yard waste, and recycling changed, and the Solid Waste Department has a new website to help people learn more. Through the new site, people can request a recycling or trash can, learn what can and can’t be recycled, organize a neighborhood cleanup, report an illegal dump, and find out what day of the week collection is for their house.

“Finally being able to offer recycling county-wide is something that we’ve been asked to do for years, and the requests for cans has shown that we’re a community that will do it,” says Solid Waste Department Director Kevin Barkley.

MBC Recycles

The Solid Waste Department is responsible for the collection of recyclables in Macon-Bibb County, as well as the landfill operation. Advanced Disposal Services (ADS) is responsible for weekly solid waste (garbage) and containerized yard debris collection throughout the entire county.

This new service delivery allows Macon-Bibb County to offer recycling to the entire county and to focus on other beautification efforts such as removing illegal dumps, picking up large debris like couches, and supporting neighborhood-led cleanups. With ADS picking up residential garbage, that material will now be taken to its landfill and not the Macon-Bibb landfill, which is mandated to close in the next few years.

“This is a major change in how things are collected, and we want people to have as much information as possible to make it a smooth transition,” adds Barkley. “We’re also helping ADS with collection as they learn the new routes and as people learn their new days.”

To ask questions about the change in service or to report an issue, call the Solid Waste Department at 478-803-0499.
