The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission will hold a press conference on Monday, December 14 at 11:00 a.m. to announce this year’s events to celebrate and honor the memory of the civil rights leader. This year’s announcement will be held in First Presbyterian Church’s Chapel (682 Mulberry Street).

“This is the time of year where we bring churches, local nonprofit organizations, and our governments together to celebrate Dr. King and to find ways which we can continue his work by serving our community,” says Macon-Bibb County Commissioner Elaine Lucas. “We have a great series of events lined up, already, and we are working with groups to help extend this celebration throughout the entire year.”

Following the announcement, members of the Commission will assist The Mentors’ Project with is annual community service project by packing bags with gloves, socks, can openers, and more for the homeless. The Mentors Project, throughout the year, is always seeking volunteers to become mentors to young men and women in Macon-Bibb, and to help with a variety of community outreach events and service projects.

“As part of our mentoring efforts, we teach our children the importance of serving others and improving the community,” says Mentors Project Executive Director June O’Neal. “By working directly with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, I want them – and the entire community – to understand the impact we each can have on someone else’s life.”

About The Mentors’ Project
The Mentors Project of Bibb County’s Mission is to provide role models for encouragement and motivation to eligible Bibb County public middle and high school students who need additional support outside their family, and to assist them in reaching their full academic, social, and personal potential.

The Mentors Project has been successful in steering students away from drugs, crime, and dropping out of school. In addition, students mention that mentors have helped them to control their temper, get along better with family members and teachers, and improve their social skills, grooming habits, and overall outlook on the future.
