Macon – A Macon man who kicked in his ex-girlfriend’s door in September 2017 and brandished an assault rifle pleaded guilty Friday to burglary and aggravated assault.

Tommy Lewis Dumas Jr., 26, was sentenced to 12 years – with the first seven in prison – as part of a plea agreement. After his release, Dumas serve the balance of his sentence on probation.

If the case had gone to trial, prosecutor Sandra Matson would have presented evidence showing:

By Sept. 30, 2017, Dumas and his girlfriend had ended their relationship. He was at Cherry Tree Hill Apartments on Old Clinton Road in east Macon when his girlfriend returned with a man, another woman and the woman’s 2-year-old child.

Dumas knocked on the ex-girlfriend’s apartment door, but no one answered. He left, but soon returned. He knocked once and then kicked in the door. He passed his ex-girlfriend’s friend and the 2-year-old child as he headed toward a bedroom in the apartment.

In the bedroom, he brandished an AK-47 assault rifle at his ex-girlfriend. A man in the room exchanged gunfire with Dumas. Dumas fled after being shot in the chest.

Dumas’ lack of a prior felony criminal record was considered when prosecutors drafted a plea offer.

Speaking after the hearing, District Attorney David Cooke said, “Mr. Dumas is lucky he didn’t pay for his poor judgement with his life, and that no one else was injured. All too often, people in this community turn to guns when they’re angry and people are killed. I hope Mr. Dumas spends his next seven years behind bars learning better ways to face challenging situations and makes better choices after his release.”
