At its meeting on July 19, the Macon-Bibb County Commission recognized local boxer Maliek Montgomery for earning the 2016 National Golden Gloves Championship in May. He earned the title after wining fights five nights in a row, the first being a TKO and the others being unanimous decisions. Mr. Montgomery is also currently an Olympic Alternate in the 132-pound weight class for the 2016 Rio Games and ranked #1 in the country by USA Boxing for the 132-pound weight class.
Mayor Pro Tem Bert Bivins and the Commission presented him and his family with a proclamation declaring July 19 to be “Maliek Montgomery Day” in Macon-Bibb County because of his athletic accomplishment and for representing the community at a superb level across the state and country.
This is the second time Mr. Montgomery has earned the title, the first being in 2014, and is the latest in a successful athletic career. Since his first fight in 2006, he has won numerous state, regional, and national titles, including National Junior Olympic Champion in 2012 (the first boxer from Macon to earn that title), and placing 2nd in the USA Nationals in 2013, 2014, and 2015. He also represented the United States in the World Series of Boxing and is currently ranked #7 in the world in the 132-pound weight class.
Mr. Montgomery graduated from Westside High School in 2013 and is currently earning a degree in Sports Marketing from Central Georgia Technical College.
