As part of the year-long program, youth leaders in Macon-Bibb County’s Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS) had the opportunity to visit government offices, museums, and educational centers in Washington, D.C. This was the first year a GCAPS cohort was able to make the trip, and the trip was designed to help show all levels of government and how they are meant to work together.

“We wanted to expose these young leaders to national government as part of their civics leadership program,” says Macon-Bibb Assistant County Manager Charles Coney. “Each level of government has a specific role in our democratic society, and we wanted to show these young leaders that and the fact that it is the people – whether elected official, appointed administrators, or citizens – that make our government and society work.”

Students were able to visit the White House Visitor Center, the offices of our U.S. Senators and Representatives, U.S. Department of Treasury, the White House Historical Association, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and more.
