The people on the East side of Macon-Bibb County have wanted a closer fire station for a long time, and now they’re getting one! You can see a MaconBibbTV video about the groundbreaking ceremony by clicking here.

“Time matters, and I know that,” Chief Marvin Riggins said. “This is going to significantly cut down on response times in this area and bring about earlier emergency response.”

At a groundbreaking ceremony, many community members, Commissioners, fire fighters, and local leaders came to lend support to the voter-approved SPLOST-funded endeavor. The station will be named for Dr. Lonzy F. Edwards, Sr., a former County Commissioner who recently passed away.

Will Stanford with BTBB Architects explains the new station won’t just be a workspace for firefighters; it will be a home away from home. “This station will feature an apparatus bay, a truck bay, a day room, dining room and kitchen, offices and officers’ quarters, a control room, and dormitory and locker features, facilities that will help them do their job,” says Will Stanford with BTBB Architects.

The new station’s construction is funded with money generated from the voter-approved SPLOST. It follows Fire Station #109 (New Forsyth Road) and Fire Station #110 (Heath Rd.), both of which which were also paid for by the SPLOST.
