To help keep the public updated on the progress of projects, Macon-Bibb County releases monthly financial statements for Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds. In an ongoing effort to increase and improve the information provided to the public about the SPLOST, a new interactive online map was launched to show how funds are being spent on each of projects. The map can be accessed by clicking here, and a new website with all SPLOST-related information is being created that will include the financial statement, announcements, and news.
In the past month, Macon-Bibb has been finishing the new Animal Welfare Center (4214 Fulton Mill Road) and preparing it to open. Staff have been working diligently to continue picking up animals, while preparing to move offices to the new shelter and put in place new procedures that will better serve the public. Volunteers and animal advocacy groups have been instrumental in engaging the larger community in supporting the public by hosting events to adopt animal in the old shelter, donate items for the new shelter, and make sure the public knows about this exciting project.
Also exciting news is the addition of Bowden Golf Course to the National Registry of Historic Places. The Course has so far received more than $500,000 in improvements because of the SPLOST. Since architects have been hired for several recreation center projects, the department is beginning to prepare for public meetings on what the community would like to have available and what improvements are needed. A public Forum for District 9 was held on March 10 and an update provided on the Filmore Thomas and Log Cabin Drive projects.
