The Ocmulgee Heritage Trail is several miles of green space, parks, picnic areas, and places to spend the day enjoying our town. It connects many areas, and is about to connect two more! An additional two miles are coming to the north end of the trail and connect Amerson RIver Park to Riverside Cemetery. You can see a MaconBibbTV feature on it here.

A $92,000 grant from the Department of Natural Resources, $230,000 from the Newtown Macon Construction Fund, and many community partnerships are making the extension possible.

Josh Rogers, President and CEO of Newtown Macon, said, “Since the trail was imagined 20 years ago, there was this dream that Amerson River Park could connect to the Ocmulgee National Monument, and at that point there wasn’t a foot of recreational trail along the river. So to see us getting closer to realizing that vision is really exciting.”

The Macon Water Authority will be making $2.3 million in sewer pipe and infrastructure repairs along the trail to aid in its success, and support even more future expansion efforts. You can learn more about MWA here, and see what Newtown Macon is doing, here.
