Macon – The Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office is set to host a site visit Monday and Tuesday for a new Bibb County school-juvenile justice partnership.
Representatives from the district attorney’s office, Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, Bibb County School District, Bibb County Juvenile Court, Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, Bibb County Department of Family and Children Services, Macon-Bibb County and other government and community partners will participate in group discussions after seeing a presentation on Clayton County’s School-Justice Partnership.
The purpose of the site visit is to prepare Bibb County to create its own partnership and determine the best next steps for how to address school incidents.
Clayton County’s reforms are aimed at addressing the root cause for why a juvenile offender broke the law and offering diversion programs as an alternative to incarceration for low-level offenders.
Since launching a school-justice partnership 15 years ago, Clayton County has seen a marked reduction in school-based arrests and overall crime along with rising high school graduation rates.
“Macon’s youth are tomorrow’s adults. We’ve got to change the way we address juvenile crime if we want to have a safer community in the future,” said District Attorney David Cooke. “Clayton County has a proven model of success that can be adapted to fit Bibb County. I’m excited to move one step closer to helping Bibb County’s children thrive and become productive adults.”
The media is invited to attend the welcome and first session set to begin at 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 23, at the Bibb County District Attorney’s Office. Please arrive by 8:20 a.m. to ensure time to set up. The first session is expected to end by 10:30 a.m.
