Macon-Bibb County’s Animal Welfare is partnering with national and local animal advocacy organizations to pardon all of the animals currently housed in the shelter and to host a four-day adoption event. From Wednesday through Saturday, February 4-7. Animal Welfare and partner groups are working with Shane Smith, who promotes and organizes these types of pardons and adoption events across the country, and former Animal Control Officer and local animal advocate Van VanDeWalker to help get all of the animals adopted.

As part of the adoption push, fees will be reduced to $80, which includes the $10 license fee required for Macon-Bibb residents and the $50 refundable spay and neuter fee. Shane and other organizations will be on site during the adoption push to help with the process, take pictures as the animals are adopted, and contact groups across the state and country that can help get more adopted.

“We do this because it has to be done,” says Shane Smith. “This is an opportunity to set up the new Center for future success.”

“The daily work of our current shelter and the opening of our new Animal Welfare Center wouldn’t be possible without the support and assistance of our animal advocacy community,” says Assistant County Manager Steve Layson. “They have helped us along throughout this process, and we’re all looking forward to working together in the new facility.”

In addition to the adoption event, partner organizations are holding a “Fur Baby Shower” for the new Center on February 28 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. This will help people support the animals at the Center by donating supplies that are used on a regular basis, including food, treats, chew toys, cotton swabs, blankets, towels, and more. If unable to come to the event, items can be dropped off at Tailspin on Mulberry Street, Ocmulgee Traders on Poplar Street, or Georgia Public Broadcasting on Linden Avenue. For a complete list of items, visit the Facebook event page by clicking here.

The new Animal Welfare Center construction is funded by the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and is located at 4214 Fulton Mill Road.
