The community was invited to join The Community Foundation of Central Georgia for the 13th Annual Al Lucas Memorial Scholarship Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 25th at 5:30pm at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. A $25 donation was suggested for attendance. All proceeds go towards the Al Lucas Memorial Scholarship Fund to support future scholarships. The following seven students from Bibb County will be honored with a $1,000 college scholarship.

  • Etta James – Westside High School
  • RaNesha Goolsby – Central High School
  • Jamaizia Wallace- Rutland High School
  • Isaiah Goolsby – Southwest High School
  • Russell Hill, III – Northeast High School
  • Alexus Norrington – Northeast High School
  • Christian Aka – Howard High School

The Lucas Family established the Al Lucas Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2005 at the Community Foundation of Central Georgia to perpetuate the legacy of Al Lucas, who died in 2005 while making a tackle during an Arena Football League game.  Al was a Macon native and extraordinary athlete who graduated from Northeast High School and played for the Los Angeles Avengers.

The scholarship in his memory is open to student athletes graduating from any Bibb County public high school with athletic programs, and his widow, De’Shonda Lucas, says it is a fitting tribute because “Al’s concern for young people will continue over the years to touch an ever-widening circle of young lives.”
