Macon-Bibb County began its 5×5 Neighborhood Improvement Program in District 8 on Monday, January 26, and it will run through Friday, February 27. To view a map of the District 8 area receiving the focused services, click here.

“Driving through District 8, I wanted to focus services in the area along Second Street on the other side of Little Richard Penniman Boulevard,” says District 8 Commissioner Virgil Watkins. “The effort to clean up and improve the neighborhood is part of our larger effort to revitalize that entire area, and I hope the people there will recognize and support the focus Macon-Bibb County is placing there.”

“As we near completion of our first year of the expanded 5×5 Program, we are already looking ahead to the next year and ways to make even further improvements and engage more of the public in supporting our neighborhoods,” says Mayor Robert Reichert.

About the 5×5 Program
The 5×5 Program began in the City of Macon at the direction of then-Mayor Reichert to enhance and target services in a five block area for five weeks. In April 2014, Macon-Bibb County relaunched the 5×5 Neighborhood Improvement Program to serve the entire county. Administration meets with each of the nine elected Commissioners to determine which five block area in their district will receive the focused services, as well as to meet with residents, churches, and community leaders about the needs they would like addressed.

The expansion of the program also includes several external agencies joining the effort to focus services and improvement efforts in a concentrated effort. Macon Area Habitat for Humanity, Community Partnerships, the Macon Water Authority, Rebuilding Macon, and the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office have joined Macon-Bibb County to help make more significant and visible improvements to specific areas.

As part of a great focus on communication with the community, Macon-Bibb County is making a concerted effort to collect and report data from the five-week focused services, and maps and reports from each District are being posted online. Those can be viewed by clicking here and selecting the ‘’5 x 5 Neighborhood Improvement Program” tab.
