Recreation Department, MLK Commission host annual oratorical contest

The Macon-Bibb County Recreation Department and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission will host a student Oratorical Competition on Saturday, January 12, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Elaine H. Lucas Senior Center in Central City Park.

The essay prompt for this year’s competition was: “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about thing that matter,” and they were asked to address the following questions.

  • What is the most important social issue in today’s society?
  • How does or can this issue affect you or people you know?
  • What do you believe has been the cause of this social issue?
  • What role have various institutions in America played in this social issue?
  • As a student how do you plan to advocate against or for this social issue?
  • How does Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s quote translate to the topic of this social issue for you?

Judges this year are Darius Maynard and Nancy Cleveland, both from the Community Foundation of Central Georgia.

The top three winners will receive a prize package and be invited to speak at a Commission Meeting on February 5, and they will be invited to speak at the on January 21 at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church as part of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast.
