Macon-Bibb County is accepting applications until August 11 for its next Youth Commission, a year-long program for students to learn more about their local consolidated government, as well as how it interacts with state and federal government. This year’s Youth Commission will meet from August 2017 through May 2018, and it is open to 10th-12th grade students in public, private, and home schools.
Students can apply for this program by clicking here.
Each month, students will meet after school to learn more about Macon-Bibb departments and partners and their roles in our community. There will be several out-of-county learning excursions, for which transportation will be provided. In the past, students have visited Japan, Germany, Atlanta, Savannah, Washington, DC, and Suwanee. Students will also be invited to Commission Meetings and given the chance to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

About the Macon-Bibb County Youth Commission
The Macon-Bibb County Youth Commission is part of the Association County Commissioners of Georgia’s (ACCG) Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS). This will be the fifth year for our cohort in our community. Last year, 26 students from Bibb County public and private high schools were selected after a rigorous application and interview process from an applicant pool of more than 100.
Students in the Youth Commission get to see how government works, what’s changing through consolidation, and how they can be involved with and improve the community now and in the future. Throughout the course of the year, students take part in team-building exercises, attend Commission meetings, tour county facilities, visit the State Capitol and U.S. White House, and interact with local and state leaders.
Pictures from their visits can be seen on their Facebook page, Below are some videos and stories produced by the Office of Public Affairs about their recognitions and visits around Macon-Bibb, the state, and the country.
