2017 Sidewalk Chalk Festival planned at Tattnall Square Park

The Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation Department is calling on you to get creative!

The 2017 Sidewalk Chalk Festival is happening from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 at Tattnall Square Park. Competitors in four categories could win prizes for their chalk masterpieces. The four categories are Ages 7 to 13, High School aged, College, and Professional. Prizes are sponsored & provided by The Creative Alternative, the Museum of Arts and Sciences, SparkMacon, and [&] Ampersand Arts.

It’s not too late to sign up! It’s just $5 for children to participate, and $10 for high school age and up. Registration can be done ahead of time at the Parks and Recreation Administrative Office located inside Central City Park (150 Willie Smokie Glover Drive), or can be done at Tattnall Square Park the morning of the event. One box of chalk (30 pieces) will be provided with registration, and additional boxes will be on sale for $5 each.

The Sidewalk Chalk Festival is FREE for spectators and visitors, and there will also be a bounce house on site and crafts for children. Judging of the art will be at 2:00 p.m. and an awards ceremony will be held at the Pavilion at 3:00 p.m.

 

Participation Rules

  • Participants can bring their own pillow, blanket or cardboard for seating if they wish, seating will not be provided for participants.
  • Participants are responsible for the security of their goods. The Committee and event organizers accept no responsibility for stolen or damaged property, accidents or injury.
  • Participants must remain “within the lines” of their assigned space and not damage the surrounding art works.
  • Participants may use additional tools; water, paint brushes, blending nibs, additional chalk, etc.
  • Participants may choose to work alone or with a partner. Each participant is required to pay the entry fee and will receive a box of chalk. If you choose to work with a partner, please indicate their name on the registration form. In the event a team of two artists wins one of the prizes, it will be up to them to split the winnings, two awards will not be given.
  • Assignment of spaces will be at the discretion of the Committee. Spaces are approximately 4’ by 4’ throughout and surrounding the park. Please plan accordingly.
  • No one will be allowed to participate without a signed and dated application and liability release. Parents of children ages 13 and under must sign for them.
  • The Committee reserves the right to revoke or refuse to grant space at any time, without recourse by the participant. The Committee shall not be liable to anyone for this action.
  • No spaces will be granted to those wishing to express religious, moral, political, or controversial opinions. Commercial advertising messages, business logos, and alcohol/tobacco themes will not be allowed.
  • Images with nudity, vulgar or explicit language or expression are NOT permitted.
  • The Committee reserves the right to deem a painting inappropriate for a family-themed event.
  • Judging will be at 2 p.m. and awards given immediately following judging at the pavilion at 3 p.m.
