First year of recycling a success

In January 2016, Macon-Bibb County introduced a new recycling program that began offering curbside pickup to all interested residents. Upon request, people could get a 65-gallon rolling recycling cart and participate in the new program. After one year of the program, more and more people are interested in being part of this green initiative and diverting trash from the landfill.

“This has been a great first year for the expanded recycling program,” says Solid Waste Director Kevin Barkley. “We’ve been amazed at how quickly this many people have asked to be a part of the program, and we couldn’t be prouder of our community. It shows that people care about recycling and want to help make a greener, more beautiful Macon-Bibb.”

From January to December, the Solid Waste Department delivered more than 9,000 recycling carts to people and collected (from houses, businesses, and drop off locations) 4,359 tons of material. That’s 8,718,000 pounds of material that will be recycled, or an average of 57 pounds per resident.

There are about 1,500 recycling cans currently available that people can request. To have one delivered to your house and to begin recycling, use SeeClickFix on the Macon-Bibb website or through the free mobile app. You can also call the Solid Waste Department directly at 478-803-0499.
